Consuming silica does not guarantee the body will absorb it.
The form most relevant to absorption is orthosilicic acid, Si(OH)₄, a small, water-soluble molecule. In fluids such as drinking water, silicon is already present largely in this form, while in solid foods it exists as polymeric or phytolithic silica, which must be hydrolyzed in the gastrointestinal tract before it can be taken up. Reviews of silicon metabolism describe orthosilicic acid as the predominant bioavailable form under physiological conditions.
This is why the total silica listed on a label tells you relatively little on its own. What matters is the fraction present in, or convertible to, a form the body can absorb.
