How Much Silica Do You Actually Need?

Why intake is only half the question, and absorption is the other half

There is no official Recommended Dietary Allowance for silicon. The World Health Organization classifies silicon among the "probably essential" trace elements, a category for which authoritative requirements have not been established in the way they have for elements such as iodine or zinc.

That absence is often treated as a gap in the science, but it points to something more useful: with silica, the relevant question is not how much you consume, but how much your body can absorb and use.

Intake: a matter of pattern, not a target number

Dietary silicon comes mainly from plant foods and drinking water. In cohort analyses from the Framingham studies, mean silicon intakes were approximately 30 to 33 mg per day in men and 24 to 25 mg per day in women, with intake decreasing with age.

Because no formal requirement has been established, the practical approach is to think in terms of overall dietary pattern rather than milligram targets. A diet built around minimally processed, plant-forward foods is more likely to contribute silicon consistently than one built around refined options.

Absorption: why form determines what reaches your tissues

Consuming silica does not guarantee the body will absorb it.

The form most relevant to absorption is orthosilicic acid, Si(OH)₄, a small, water-soluble molecule. In fluids such as drinking water, silicon is already present largely in this form, while in solid foods it exists as polymeric or phytolithic silica, which must be hydrolyzed in the gastrointestinal tract before it can be taken up. Reviews of silicon metabolism describe orthosilicic acid as the predominant bioavailable form under physiological conditions.

This is why the total silica listed on a label tells you relatively little on its own. What matters is the fraction present in, or convertible to, a form the body can absorb.

Intake is the starting point. Absorption is the filter.

Where LIVING SILICA® fits in

This absorption question is what LIVING SILICA® was built around, and it is why the brand's positioning centers on form rather than on silica in general.

LIVING SILICA® is a heritage brand established in 1994, developed by Sc. D. Loïc Le Ribault. The formula is produced through Heritage Concentrate®, the proprietary process developed to enhance the solubility limit of silicon and maintain it in a small, monomeric form intended to support intestinal absorption.

On the clinical side, the study by Ferreira et al. (2018) evaluated two specific silicon formulations, monomethylsilanetriol and maltodextrin-stabilized orthosilicic acid, at 5 mg of elemental silicon twice daily over 150 days. Compared with placebo, the silicon groups showed statistically significant differences in measured skin parameters. These findings apply to those specific formulations, that population, dose, and duration, and are not generalizable to silica supplements as a category.

What to look for in a silica supplement

Silica status cannot be assessed reliably at home, so a more productive approach is to evaluate the product itself.

  • Form. Does the formula use a bioavailable form of silicon that has been studied in humans?

  • Transparency. Are the amounts clearly stated, and is the manufacturing process explained?

  • Fit with your routine. Does it work alongside collagen-supportive nutrients such as vitamin C and adequate protein?

Silica as one part of a broader picture

Silica does not work in isolation. It is one contributor within a network of nutrients that supports skin, hair & nails and bones & joints.

Protein and amino acids provide the building blocks for collagen. Vitamin C acts as a cofactor in collagen synthesis. Silica supports the body's own collagen production, which is the basis of the LIVING SILICA® positioning as a collagen booster and a vegan alternative to animal collagen.

FAQs

How much silica do I need per day?

There is no official Recommended Dietary Allowance for silicon, which the WHO classifies among the "probably essential" trace elements. The more useful focus is the overall quality of your dietary pattern and, with supplements, whether the silicon is in a form the body can absorb.

How much silicon do adults typically consume?

In Framingham cohort analyses, mean intakes were approximately 30 to 33 mg per day in men and 24 to 25 mg per day in women.

Does the form of silica really matter?

Yes. Orthosilicic acid is the form most readily absorbed. Silicon in solid foods exists as polymeric or phytolithic silica and must be hydrolyzed before uptake.

Can I get enough silica from food alone?

Diet is the foundation, and research indicates that solid foods are a major source of available silicon. Whether a supplement adds value depends on your individual dietary pattern and goals, and is best discussed with a qualified healthcare professional.

Can I take silica alongside other collagen-supportive nutrients?

Yes. Silica is commonly used alongside vitamin C and adequate protein. It complements these nutrients rather than replacing them.

Who should be especially thoughtful about silica supplements?

Anyone with kidney disease, complex medical conditions, or multiple medications should consult a healthcare professional before adding new supplements. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals also benefit from personalized guidance.
