SILICA AND BONE HEALTH

Studies have shown that silica deficiency can cause deformities in peripheral bones and the skull; reduce cartilage, which you need for healthy joints, interrupt collagen production, and interrupt the mineral balance in your femur and vertebrae.

We can consider Silica as the structural glue holding our bodies together. When talking about our bones, Silica reduces bone breakdown and stimulates bone formation, and this is something that is not common on nutrients.

Some of the benefits Silica offers are:

  • Osteoblasts Stimulation: Osteoblasts are the major cellular component of bone. Silica Stimulate Osteoblasts by increasing protein collagen synthesis. Collagen is a protein that provides the framework of your bones, while calcium and other minerals fill in and strengthen that framework. This combination makes your bones both flexible and robust enough to withstand stress like falls.
  • Osteoclasts Inhibition: Osteoclasts break down bone tissue, and along with osteoblasts and osteocytes from the structural components of bone, your bone-resorbing cells. It works by directly discouraging bone resorption. Bone resorption is when osteoclasts break down the tissue in bone and release the minerals. This results in the transfer of calcium from your bone tissue into your blood. But we want those minerals to stay inside, not out!
  • Bone Recharge: Silica charges your bone formation. Your bone mineralization takes place in negatively charged areas in the bone. It works taking the negative charges coming from silica crystals that react to physical stress on the bone.

Other studies have shown that in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis the spongy inner bone, known as trabecular bone, benefits from silicon supplementation.

We exposed to numerous sources of silica/silicon including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and medical implants and supplements, and others, but the primary and most important source of exposure for the majority of us is our diet, so always keep a healthy lifestyle in mind.
