Silica and Bone Support After 40: Beyond Calcium and Collagen

Where collagen fits into bone support

Collagen is one of the primary proteins found in bone’s organic matrix. Dietary protein, including collagen-containing foods and supplements, provides amino acids and peptides that the body can use during normal protein metabolism.

However, consuming collagen is not the same as directly delivering intact collagen to bone. Dietary proteins must first be digested and absorbed. The body then uses their components according to its physiological needs.

Normal collagen formation also depends on additional nutritional factors. Vitamin C, for example, contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of bones and cartilage. Adequate overall protein intake is also important.

For this reason, calcium and collagen should not be understood as competing or independent solutions. They are components within a larger nutritional and biological system.

What research says about silicon and bone health

Silicon is a naturally occurring element found in foods, beverages and drinking water. Scientific interest in silicon and bone health has developed from observational research, laboratory investigations and a limited number of human supplementation studies.

 

Dietary silicon and bone mineral density

Jugdaohsingh et al., writing in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research in 2004, examined dietary silicon intake and bone mineral density among participants in the Framingham Offspring cohort.

The researchers reported positive associations between higher dietary silicon intake and bone mineral density at certain hip sites in men and premenopausal women. The same pattern was not clearly observed in postmenopausal women.

These findings are observational. They do not demonstrate that silicon caused an improvement in bone mineral density, nor do they establish that taking a silica supplement produces the same association. The study instead provides a reason to continue investigating silicon as one element within the broader nutritional environment associated with bone health.

A later scientific review by Jugdaohsingh concluded that evidence suggested a potential relationship between dietary silicon and bone and connective tissue health. The review also emphasized that silicon’s exact biological role remained unclear and that proposed mechanisms required further research

 

Research on a specific form of orthosilicic acid

Spector et al., in a 2008 randomized, placebo-controlled trial published in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, evaluated choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid, or ch-OSA, as an adjunct to calcium and vitamin D3 in women with osteopenia.

The researchers assessed several markers related to bone turnover. Their findings indicated changes in certain markers associated with bone collagen formation, including procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide, commonly known as PINP, in some treatment groups.

The distinction between the ingredient studied and silica products in general is essential. The trial evaluated a particular choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid formulation alongside calcium and vitamin D3. It did not test dietary silicon, silica as a general category or LIVING SILICA®.

Its findings therefore cannot be applied automatically to every silica-containing formulation.

 

What the evidence allows us to conclude

The available research supports continued scientific interest in silicon and bone health. It does not establish silicon as a treatment for osteoporosis, bone loss or any other medical condition.

A 2007 review noted that possible relationships with collagen synthesis, collagen stabilization and matrix mineralization had been proposed, but also concluded that silicon’s precise biological role had not been fully established. More recent reviews have similarly identified significant limitations in determining an effective level of silicon supplementation for skeletal health.

The responsible conclusion is that silicon may be relevant to the nutritional environment surrounding bone and connective tissues, but more human research is needed to understand its specific role.

It is also important to distinguish between studies involving dietary silicon, soluble orthosilicic acid and proprietary stabilized formulations. Evidence obtained with one source or formulation should not be used as direct substantiation for another unless their equivalence has been scientifically established.

Bone health is shaped by nutrition, movement, age, genetics, hormones and general health. No single nutrient or supplement can replace that larger foundation.
