7 Nutrients to Consider for Healthy Hair

What each one contributes, and why the form of a supplement matters as much as the ingredient

Walk into any supplement aisle and you will find dozens of hair formulas, each listing biotin, collagen, or keratin. What the labels rarely explain is how those ingredients are absorbed, or what role each one actually plays.

This article looks at seven nutrients commonly discussed in the context of hair, what public health sources say about each, and why bioavailability deserves more attention than it usually gets.

Key Takeaways

  • Hair emerges from collagen-rich tissue, so structural support matters alongside surface-level ingredients.

  • Bioavailability determines how much of a nutrient the body can absorb and use.

  • Each nutrient below plays a distinct role, and they work best as complements rather than alternatives.

  • LIVING SILICA® supports the body's natural collagen production, contributing to healthy skin, hair & nails.

  • A varied diet remains the foundation; supplements fill gaps rather than replace it.

1. Bioavailable Silica

Silica supports the body's natural collagen production and connective tissue.

The most relevant clinical work examined a specific bioavailable form. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, Wickett et al. (2007) gave 48 women with fine hair either 10 mg of silicon per day as choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid (ch-OSA) or placebo, over nine months. The ch-OSA group showed a smaller decrease in elastic gradient and break load compared with placebo, and an increase in cross-sectional area.

Two caveats matter: this study evaluated ch-OSA, a specific choline-stabilized formulation, not silica in general and not LIVING SILICA®. The findings apply to that population, dose, and duration.

2. Iron

Iron is an essential mineral needed to make hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. Anyone concerned about their iron status should discuss it with a qualified healthcare professional, since iron requires proper assessment before supplementing.

3. Biotin

Biotin, or vitamin B7, helps the body convert food into energy and is involved in keratin-related metabolism. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements notes that biotin deficiency is very rare in the United States, that most people get enough from food, and that there is little scientific evidence supporting biotin supplements for improving hair, skin, and nail health.

One practical note: high biotin intake can interfere with certain laboratory tests, so it is worth informing your healthcare provider before testing.

4. Zinc

Zinc is an essential mineral involved in protein synthesis, cell division, and tissue maintenance. As with iron, zinc status is best evaluated with a healthcare professional, since zinc interacts with the absorption of other minerals.

5. Vitamin D

Vitamin D is involved in a wide range of physiological processes, including calcium absorption and normal cell function. Individual needs vary considerably, and decisions about testing or supplementation are best made with a qualified healthcare professional.

6. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fats found in fish, algae, flaxseed, and walnuts. They are components of cell membranes throughout the body and are part of a balanced dietary pattern. Algae-based sources offer a plant-based option.

7. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is required for the biosynthesis of collagen, which is why it is frequently paired with nutrients that support connective tissue. It is widely available in fruits and vegetables such as bell peppers, kiwi, citrus, and broccoli.

Why the Form of Silica Matters

Not all silica behaves the same way. Silicon exists as soluble monomers, polymers, colloidal particles, and poorly soluble mineral structures.

The principle is straightforward: monomeric silicon is readily absorbed, while other forms are decreasingly well absorbed with increasing polymerization. This is why the total silica listed on a label tells you relatively little on its own.

Where LIVING SILICA® Fits In

LIVING SILICA® is a heritage brand established in 1994, developed by Sc. D. Loïc Le Ribault. The formula is produced through Heritage Concentrate, the proprietary process developed to enhance the solubility limit of silicon and maintain it in a small, monomeric form for intestinal absorption.

LIVING SILICA® supports the body's natural collagen production, contributing to healthy skin, hair & nails and to healthy bones & joints.

Building a Balanced Approach

These nutrients are complements, not competitors. Each contributes to a different part of the picture, and no single one replaces the others.

A varied diet remains the foundation. Where supplements are concerned, the useful questions are whether the form has documented bioavailability, whether the manufacturer is transparent about its process, and whether the product fits alongside the rest of your nutrition.

Anyone taking medication, managing a medical condition, who is pregnant or breastfeeding, or considering combining several supplements should consult a qualified healthcare professional.

FAQs

Is one nutrient more important than the others for hair?

No single nutrient works in isolation. Each contributes to different aspects of nutrition, and a varied diet remains the foundation.

Should I take silica and biotin together?

They work through different pathways and are commonly combined in formulations for skin, hair & nails. Discuss any new combination with a healthcare professional.

Does the form of silica matter?

Yes. Monomeric silicon is readily absorbed, while absorption decreases as silicon becomes more polymerized. The form is more informative than the total amount listed.

Do I need a biotin supplement if I eat a balanced diet?

The NIH notes that most people get enough biotin from food and that deficiency is very rare in the United States.

What was studied in the ch-OSA hair research?

Wickett et al. (2007) studied 48 women with fine hair taking 10 mg of silicon per day as choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid over nine months. That study evaluated ch-OSA specifically.

How should I evaluate a silica supplement?

Look at the molecular form, whether the formulation prevents polymerization, the transparency of the manufacturer, and whether peer-reviewed research exists on that specific formulation.
