A Beginner's Guide to Silica Supplements for Hair

Silica rarely makes the supplement shortlist for hair. Most people reach for biotin or collagen first, and that instinct makes sense: both are familiar, both are well studied, and both have earned their place in beauty routines.

Silica is the one most people have not looked into yet. It is a trace mineral, and LIVING SILICA® has spent three decades researching it. This guide covers what the published research actually examined, what bioavailability means when you compare labels, and where biotin and silica fit alongside each other.

Key Takeaways

Silica is a trace mineral extracted from quartz. LIVING SILICA® supports healthy skin, hair & nails. Not all silica is equally absorbable. LIVING SILICA® formula is readily absorbed, while other forms are decreasingly well absorbed as polymerization increases. Modern diets are lacking in silica compared with the past, especially after the age of 35. Biotin and silica are different nutrients with different roles. They are used together in beauty formulas, not as substitutes for one another. LIVING SILICA® is a heritage formula pioneered in 1994 by Sc.D. Loïc Le Ribault, produced through the Heritage Concentrate™ proprietary process.

What Is Silica?

Silica is a trace mineral composed of silicon and oxygen, extracted from quartz. The body does not produce it, so intake comes from food, water or supplementation.

Its relevance to beauty routines is straightforward: silica contributes to the production of collagen, a protein important for maintaining healthy skin, hair and nails. It is also involved in the formation and maintenance of connective tissues.

Scientific studies have shown that deficiencies in this mineral can impact appearance and well-being, and modern diets are lacking in silica compared with the past, especially after the age of 35. That is the window in which most people start looking into it.

What the Research Has Examined

Two randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies are the ones most often cited in this area. They are worth separating, because they looked at different tissues.

  • The skin study

Barel et al. (2005), published in Archives of Dermatological Research, followed 50 women with photodamaged skin who received 10 mg Si per day as choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid, or a placebo, over 20 weeks. The primary outcomes concerned skin roughness and mechanical properties, with self-assessed hair and nail brittleness as secondary observations. This is skin evidence, and we present it as such.

  • The hair study

Wickett et al. (2007), in the same journal, evaluated 48 women with fine hair who received 10 mg Si per day as choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid, or a placebo, over nine months. The endpoints were the morphology and tensile properties of the hair fiber: break load, elastic gradient and cross-sectional area.

Being precise here matters more than being impressive. Break load describes how the hair fiber resists breaking under load, and cross-sectional area describes the thickness of the fiber itself. Neither is the same as growth rate or follicle count, and those were not measured. Anyone telling you a silica study proved faster growth is describing a study that was not run.

What Bioavailability Means on a Label

"Silica" on an ingredient list can refer to very different chemical forms, and the amount in milligrams tells you little on its own.

The relevant principle is this: LIVING SILICA® formula is readily absorbed, while other forms are decreasingly well absorbed as polymerization increases. In practical terms, two products can both list silica and differ substantially in how much absorbable silicon they actually deliver.

Heritage Concentrate™

LIVING SILICA® was pioneered in 1994 by Sc.D. Loïc Le Ribault and is produced through Heritage Concentrate™, the proprietary process used across all LIVING SILICA® products. This method enhances the solubility limit of silicon and maintains it in a small, monomeric and easily absorbed form for intestinal absorption.

Two things are worth keeping separate. Heritage Concentrate™ is a formulation process, documented and trademarked. The clinical studies cited above examined the ingredient. Those are different categories of evidence, and a brand that respects your intelligence will not blur them.

You can see the formula in the Mineral-Based Collagen Booster.

Silica and Biotin

Biotin is a well-established nutrient in hair and beauty formulations, with a recognized role in the metabolic pathways that support keratin, the protein of the visible hair strand. It deserves its reputation.

Silica sits elsewhere in the picture, contributing to the production of collagen and to the connective tissue that supports healthy skin, hair & nails.

They are different nutrients doing different jobs, which is exactly why beauty formulas increasingly include both. Treating them as rivals is a marketing habit, not a nutritional one. If you want the longer comparison, we cover it in silica vs biotin for hair.

How to Choose a Silica Supplement

1. Ask how the silicon is formulated

A documented, disclosed formulation process tells you more than a number on a label. Look for a brand that can explain how its silicon is stabilized and kept in an absorbable form, and that puts that process in writing.

2. Ask for named evidence

A reference to "clinical studies" without a journal, a year, a dose and a study population is not a reference. Ask which study, on which substance, measuring what. Then check whether the evidence concerns the ingredient or the finished product, because those are not the same claim.

3. Choose the format you will keep using

LIVING SILICA® is available in liquid, capsule and powder formats. There is no format hierarchy to worry about here. Pick the one that fits your routine, because the supplement that works is the one you actually take.

How Long Should You Give It?

The published studies ran on long timelines. The skin study by Barel et al. lasted 20 weeks and reported skin endpoints. The hair study by Wickett et al. lasted nine months and reported hair fiber endpoints. Neither was a short trial, and neither result transfers to the other tissue.

LIVING SILICA® uses a 90-Day Protocol as its recommended intake period. It is a practical framework for building a consistent routine and for giving yourself a fair review point, rather than a promised results date.

Silica in Food

Silica occurs naturally in a range of plant foods, and horsetail is a recognized botanical source. Including these in your diet is worthwhile on its own terms.

The practical limitation is consistency. Intake from food varies day to day, and modern diets are lacking in silica compared with the past, particularly after the age of 35. Supplementation is a way of making daily intake predictable, which is a different argument from saying food does not count.

Starting a Routine

Step 1: Pick one product

Start with a single formula rather than stacking several. LIVING SILICA® offers Mineral-Based and Plant-Based Collagen Boosters in liquid, capsule and powder formats. Any of them is a valid starting point.

Step 2: Follow the label

Dosage is product-specific. Follow the intake instructions on the label of the product you purchase rather than a general guideline from an article.

Step 3: Stay consistent for 90 days, then review

Link the supplement to an existing daily habit and keep it somewhere visible. If you want a personal reference point, take photographs in consistent lighting at the start and at 30, 60 and 90 days. This is a personal tracking habit, not a measurement method, and it will not demonstrate causation.

Who Tends to Look Into Silica

LIVING SILICA® is formulated for health-conscious adults aged 30 and above who take a proactive, informed approach to wellness and who research what they put in their bodies before they buy it.

Safety

The GRAS determination held by Silicium Laboratories covers Acacia Gum-Stabilized Monomethylsilanetriol as an ingredient, under its defined conditions of use. GRAS status applies to that ingredient under those conditions rather than to every finished product in the range, and we state it that way deliberately.

LIVING SILICA® products are manufactured in a GMP facility. Individual product attributes, including vegan, gluten-free and GMO-free status, are listed on each product page and label.

If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication or managing a medical condition, consult your healthcare professional before adding any supplement to your routine.

In Conclusion

Choosing a silica supplement comes down to three questions: how the silicon is formulated, whether the brand can name its evidence, and whether the format fits your routine well enough that you will stay consistent.

LIVING SILICA® has been working on the first question since 1994, and on the third by offering three formats. The consistency is yours. For the practical detail on intake, start with how much silica you actually need.

FAQs

Does silica make hair grow faster?

The published hair research measured the mechanical properties and morphology of the hair fiber, specifically break load, elasticity and cross-sectional area. Growth rate and hair count were not among the endpoints, so that question has not been answered by these studies.

How is silica different from biotin?

They are different nutrients with different roles in the body. They are commonly formulated together rather than chosen one over the other.

How long did the hair study run?

Nine months, at 10 mg Si per day. LIVING SILICA® recommends a 90-Day Protocol as a practical starting period for building a consistent routine.

Should I stop eating silica-rich foods if I supplement?

No. Food sources contribute to your overall intake. Supplementation makes daily intake more consistent.
